“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
-Colossians 2: 6-7 – expanded reading: Colossians 2:6-10
I’m drawn to verse 7: “Let your roots grow down into him.” Other translations say it a little differently, such as NIV, “rooted and built up in him.” So how do we grow our roots down into Christ? Of course we can read the Bible, go to church and listen to great sermons, but I think God has given us more tools that we can use to grow a deeper connection. As I am writing this, I am watching the trees towering above me, knowing they have a deep root system that draws nutrients from the earth. We are like those trees. We take nourishment from the earth and we exchange oxygen and CO2. God created trees and God created each of us and I believe the Holy Spirit flows through us as the sap flows through the trees. By taking time to meditate and reflect on how our physical bodies need the energies of this earth (nutrients, water, oxygen) and sensing the Spirit’s flow through my being brings such peace, deeper understanding, and connection. I believe this scripture is telling us to allow the Spirit to flow through us. When our ‘roots’ are deep, we will have the freedom that only comes when we allow Christ to fill us and flow through us.
Prayer: Your love and Spirit are abundant, help us to set our ‘roots’ deep into the earth you created. May your Spirit fully fill us, so that we can live within the body of Christ. Amen.
