Life Together Devotion – 9/24/2026

-reading Genesis 18:1-15

Community becomes most visible when something is hard. Last year, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer and the last days came quickly, our family was enveloped in love, and food, and cards, and people simply showing up.

I’ve watched the same thing happen for others. A student is struggling. A sister needs support. A family is grieving. Suddenly, people are bringing meals, sending messages, giving what they can, and asking, “What do you need?”

Those moments remind me that community isn’t really about agreeing on everything. It’s about belonging to one another.

In Genesis, Abraham sees three visitors approaching. He doesn’t wait for them to ask for something. He notices them. He welcomes them. He offers food, water, rest, and a place at his table.

There’s something beautifully simple about that.

Faith doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Most of the time, it looks incredibly ordinary. Notice someone. Make room. Invite them to the table. Check on the person who’s having a hard week. Share what you have. Listen. Pray for someone—and then show up for them.

Maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts a church can offer: a place where people know they don’t have to navigate life alone. A place where someone notices when you need a little extra care and says “There is room for you here.”

That’s the kind of community I hope we keep choosing to build.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of our faith community and for the big and small ways we show up for each other. Help us notice who needs a place at the table and generously offer what we have. Thank you for reminding us that it is truly good to be family. Amen.
