Life Together Devotion – 9/25/2026

-reading Genesis 28:10-16

Steve Kohls loved being a part of Lord of Life Lutheran because it was such a “collection of misfits.” He fit right in. So, do I. Before his death, Steve was the Brainerd Dispatch lead photographer for over 50 years. His photography was a great gift to our church. A recovering alcoholic, no secret, he helped many others enter into recovery. We all have hopes, dreams, joys, and burdens to bear. Steve was one of the first to answer God’s call to help grow Lord of Life. Steve lived a thankful life, no stranger to worship, or to serving the neighbor.

Our Genesis text gives a glimpse into the life of Jacob, our ancient patriarch of the Jewish faith. He could be a selfish scoundrel. In this episode, Jacob was on his way to meet his brother, Esau, whom he feared might kill him because Jacob had cheated him out of his eldest son birthright and Father’s blessing. Esau forgave Jacob, and God used that selfish man to found a family and nation meant to bless all the earth’s people. God moved through Jacob to bring blessing to our day. To help Steve Kohls, you and me, to be sure Lord of Life is one of God’s blessing places.

Jacob, in his dream, sees a ladder extending to heaven, with angels descending and ascending. It wasn’t meant for Jacob to climb up to God. Nor us. None worthy. Turns out, God was right there beside Jacob as he fearfully considered his future. Same for us. Misfits can’t climb ladders to heaven, sinners all. Amazing God dwells here with us. Loves, forgives, blesses, and even moves through us to bless the whole rest of the world. No exceptions. Can you see it in your life? In Lord of Life? In our nation? Our world longs for God’s blessing.

Prayer: Come Lord Jesus, and be our guest. And the neighbors’ guest too. Thanks be to God. Amen.
